Jewish baby names are everywhere, literally. According to theJewish Data Bank, while the Jewish population in the U.S.is estimated to be only 6.7 million people, about 2% of the entire population, Jewish names, such asAsher, have been becoming more and more popular in the U.S.over the past few years.
Recently, using the Social Security Administration's2015 data, the analysts over atMooseRoots(which is a genealogy research site powered byGraphiq) made a list of the most common Jewish baby names. The way they created the list is interesting–they calculated the frequency of a given name that can be traced back to Jewish roots in the U.S.per every million babies born.
Here are some of my favorites from their list:
1.Hannah. Hannahis a female Hebrew name meaning "compassionate." She was also the mother of the prophet Samuel.
2.Aliyah. Aliyahis a female Hebrew name meaning "ascend" or "go up."
3.Sharon. Sharonis a girl's name in Hebrew and means the "coastal plain of Israel."
4.乔尔。Joel,or Yoel,is a Hebrew boy's name meaning "The Lord is God."
5.Oren. Orenis a Hebrew boy's name meaning "pine tree."
6.Judah. Judah,or Yehuda,is a Hebrew boy's name meaning "praised." He is also one of Jacob's sons, and one of the 12 tribes of Israel.(Bonus points: The hero of the Hanukkah story is Judah the Maccabee.)
